Although you could build a website from scratch, you’ve made the choice to purchase an existing one. Or, you are an investor looking to “flip” a website after enhancing its value. Either way, you now have to find a website to buy.
Your initial step should be to figure out what you want a website to do. You may want it for the mailing list, or perhaps as an income flow from “piggy-back” links, or to hold as a niche, a catchy domain, or site for future development then resale. Your search can now begin since you know what you are looking for.
One way is to search website trading sites. Here is not where you find bargains.Don’t rule it out though if you are looking for something specific.
Search engines can also prove useful.Unless you have deep pockets, those first few well-managed sites may be all too pricey. If this is not what you are looking for, you will need to keep going through the list. Going further along you will see sites with lower page ranking but this is where the less expensive sites will found which can enhanced into better sites once you own them. Don’t forget to take notice of those first few sites though as these will help you gain insight into what the “big boys” of your industry are doing.
A prime element of purchasing real estate is location – with a website it is research. Unless you are buying with the short-term goal to flip, you are buying to own not rent, and just as you would take more diligence in buying a house over renting an apartment, you need to take the time to research.
Research each site that you think might fit the bill carefully. Take your time when exploring the site – read the forums, check the links, determine the history.Don’t be afraid to ditch one if something is beyond repairing through your enhancement plan – better to walk away before money is on the table.
Mistakes get made every day from people buying websites but you can minimize these by being careful and patient.
