Tattoos are an expression of a person’s inner feelings or a representation of an alliance they have. This is a personal statement that permanently lives onto the skin in anticipation of having it professionally removed. Cross tattoos are very popular and express a person’s religious beliefs or just their appreciation of the art form. Making the effort to check out a book of tattoos is advisable.
In the regions of Ireland, Scotland and Great Britain the Celtic Cross is a popular iconic symbol. Dating back to the 8th century the design is a cross with a circle over the intersecting point. Legend has it that St. Patrick created the first Celtic cross when he drew a circle over the Latin cross to incorporate the pagan moon goddess.
Christians use the cross as a symbol of Christ dying for our sins. Romans commonly used crosses as a way of execution for non-Romans and slaves. Unlike the Jewish faith who are not allowed to get tattoos Christians are allowed to get them. The classic cross is the Latin cross or crux ordinaria, the vertical post represents the divine and the horizontal represents the world. The intersection is the union of both.
Tribal tattoos can be in the style of Maori art which consists of spiral designs that are striking. Maori women were typically tattooed on their lips, chin and sometimes on their spinal. Their symbols have a sacred significance.
Gothic or ornamental crosses provide the Latin cross tattoos and then adorned with intricate scrolling or sometimes they can have a German look about them. The cross can have the addition of barbed wire or swords and daggers.
Not all tattoos are religious in nature, many of them represent ancient cultures. They are worn by men and women on the shoulders, back and forearms. Women tend to like them on their ankles or lower backs. Whatever your choice make sure you take a look at pictures of them first as they are permanent.
